Food specialties to try out in Rome

In this article, I will share some of the food specialties to try out in Rome, as well as the best addresses I got to go to during my stay.

When we hear Italian food specialties, we always think about the pizza and pasta. There’s that indeed, but not only !

Here are the top places to eat in Rome and the best food to try out !

The best places for pizza

Rome is famous for their pizza al taglio, which means pizza by the slice. One of those best pizza we got, was near the Vatican, at Bonci Pizzarium.

I’d suggest going before of after the regular lunch hours because it can be quite crowded.

They got really diverse toppings and for a good price (we got 4 slices for 10€).

We went at 6pm and we got our slices in less than 5 minutes !

Another great pizza, more precisely a Calzone, was in Da Secondo, a restaurant in a little street near the piazza Navona.

What’s also really enjoyable in this restaurant is that you can see the cook make the fresh pasta in front of you !

There are many great addresses in Rome for pizza, however some are too touristy or too crowded.

Best places for pasta

I absolutely loved the pasta at Da Secondo (on the last picture above). They have everything you look for a in a traditional pasta plate !

We also went to Mastrociccia, an Osteria with lots of pasta options. I had the Tonnarelli alla gricia that was really good, but I preferred the first ones.

Other great italian food specialties

Other than pizza and pasta, a great italian specialty are panini. A panino is sandwich made of freshly baked bread and typically Tuscan ingredients like tartufo, pecorino and prosciutto crudo.

The best ones were at All’Antico Vinaio, a family panino-plus-vino store opened since 1989.

For dessert, I loved coming to Mr Tiramisu every evening, a great address for Tiramisu in Rome, with 100 flavours. And you can get them to go if the small place is booked !

We tried the pistachio one, the honey & rosemary, the white chocolate & cacao, and lastly the pecan and maple one. They were all an absolute delight !

Lastly, there are tons of glacier in the streets to order a nice gelato (ice cream). The best ones are well-known and will have long queue, but there are plenty of good ones. We tried some at The Gelatist that were really good and not that expensive.

That’s it for my food recs, I had a lot more places I wanted to try out but they were all booked.. Make sure to make a reservation if there’s a place you really want to try out ! I won’t list them here as I didn’t get a chance to try them personally
