Best things to do in Prague by night

If you are spending a few days in Prague, I can’t recommend enough visiting it also by night. I share here a list of the best things to do in Prague by night.

There are more than a few spots worth seeing once the sun in down but if you go during Winter you will plenty of nighttime !

I went during December so the night sets pretty early (a little bit after 4 p.m), that gives you plenty of time to see the city by night.

The Christmas markets

Prague has a lot of Christmas market during December and it’s an even better experience go see them by night.

You will find the main ones at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Also worth the walk is the small market in the Prague Castle.

You can expect to find small wooden huts, strings of lights, christmas trees and a loooot of food ! It’s the best place to try all the Czech specialties.

Charles Bridge

I absolutely recommend taking a walk at sunset on Charles Bridge.

Charles Bridge is the oldest bridge still standing over the Vltava river in Prague and the second oldest bridge in the Czech Republic.

In the Advent period (pre-Christmas), several lanterns are lit by a lantern lighter.

You can encounter him on the bridge (around sunset, it was at 4:15 p.m for us, mid December), wearing a historical suit, lighting the gas lanterns with a long pole.

Franz Kafka rotating head

Installed in 2014, the 11m tall mirrored head is made of 42 rotating layers of stainless steel. It weighs around 45 tons.

The piece cleverly reveals Kafka’s tortured personality and relentless self doubt that tormented him his entire life.

We originally planned to see the Franz Kafka rotating head during the day, but the sun had set very quickly.

It resulted in an even better experience with all the city lights reflecting on the mirrored head.

Wandering downtown

Lastly, I really enjoyed wandering in the streets downtown. Simply because during December there are a lot of animations, exhibitions, and pleasant surprises.

For example, we were in a little Christmas market in front of the municipal library of Prague and we saw a performance with lights, music and angels on stilts, lights.

At night, the city has lights everywhere so it really is a wonderful experience to stroll on the big avenues (such as Vaclavske nam) or even the Old Town square (but be ready for the crowd).
