A must do when coming to Oman, even for a short period, is to spend a day in the Wahiba Sands Desert.
Around a 3-hour drive south of Oman, the Wahiba Sands desert is stretching over 125 miles (200 kilometers) from the Eastern Hajar Mountains to the Arabian Sea. This desert region is known for its amber-colored sands and towering sand dunes, some standing up to 330 feet (100 meters) high.
The best time to visit Wahiba Sands – and Oman in general – is during the winter months from October to April.
After long hours of research we booked a night in the Legend Desert Camp.
It seemed like the best option for something typical, authentic but still with some confort (it absolutely did not disappoint, I cannot recommend this place enough !).
For an extra cost (20 OMR), they can pick you up at the entrance of the desert so you don’t have to drive through the sand dunes.
I’d recommend this option as the camp is in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t have the location on Google Maps. Plus, you will have an experienced driver taking you, the ride is fun and you can enjoy the views during this 15 minutes ride.
Once you arrive at the camp, you get a warm welcome with dates, cardamon tea and fresh water.
They show you your tent, the different amenities and dinner place, then you can enjoy the place freely until dinner time.
We explored the dunes and soaked in the sunset views. The silent, the peace, the constant change of colours in the sky and the sand, it is an exceptional experience.
Regarding the accommodation, you have a big tent with a double bed, chairs, electricity… Right outside, there’s a little cabin with an open roof with the shower, toilet and sink.
Around 7 p.m, you get called for dinner, there’s a buffet with grilled chicken, rice, omani bread, hummus, greens… All the typical omani food.
For dessert there’s a traditional recipe called Halwa (it’s like a jelly made from dates).
After the dinner, you are invited to sit by the fire, enjoy some warm cardamon tea and enjoy the clear sky filled with stars.
The following day, breakfast is at 7 a.m (a great buffet you can enjoy at your table with your feet in the sand) so we woke up extra early to enjoy the sunrise and walk in the dunes.
Whenever you are ready you let the host know you need a ride back and the driver will arrive in 15 minutes to take you back to the main road.
I strongly suggest booking a night in Wahiba Sands as it is truly an unforgettable experience !
