The best museums to see in Prague

When visiting Prague, after exploring the old town and its historical places, spending a few hours in the Prague museums is a great activity.

So, without further ado, here is a list of the best museums to see in Prague !

the kunsthalle praha

The Kunsthalle Praha is brand new private art museum for contemporary art (opened on the 22nd of February 2022).

Situated in the historic center of Prague, it is a non-governmental organisation and non-profit museum.

You will find 3 large gallery spaces, a design shop, a bistro, and a café with a terrace overlooking the Petřín Hill and Prague Castle.

The name Kunsthalle is an accurate description of this institution. “Kunsthalles”, dating back to the 19th century, were used as spaces hosting temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. Such kunsthalles can still be found all around Europe.

Thus, when coming to this museum, you will maybe not find the same exhibit that were on display a few months ago.

When we visited it, we discovered the world’s largest exhibition of Gregor Hilderbrandt’s work.

It represents 20 years of work of this Berlin-based artist.

It was composed of two different expositions, called A Blink of an Eye and the Years are Behind Us.

Every art piece were created with vinyl, audiotapes and their components. It is truly impressive and a massive work.

His other work of art is made with chess boards and pawns :

The last exhibition was called Invisible Forces, and was created by Iva Polanecka. It is a digital art exhibition representing the photosynthesis process. Consisting of large-format projections, this installation immerse you in the micro and macrocosms of natural systems.

Entrance fee : 290 CZK (12,2 €) for adults, and 180 CZK (7,5€) for seniors and for the 15-26 years old, free for children under 15.

Opening hours : Depends on the days, it’s mainly 11am to 7pm, except for Tuesdays where it’s closed. I would suggest to check on their website before coming. You can also buy your ticket directly on the website to avoid to wait in line even though there were no one when we visited in December).

The Narodni museum

The Narodni museum is the National museum of Prague and the biggest museum in Czechia. It is located at the top of the Wenceslas square.

It is divided into 5 specialized and independent departments: the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Museum of History, the Museum of Czech Music, the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures and the National Museum Library.

The monument in itself is worth the visit. The museum, which occupies a new-Renaissance building, was founded in 1818.

Its central vestibule also serves as a pantheon for great Czech figures.

Entrance fee : Tickets for the museum complex + Cupola cost 250 CZK (10,5€) for adults or 150 CZK (6,3€) for students/seniors. It’s free for children under 15.

Opening hours : Open everyday from 10am to 6pm. We went on a Monday at 2pm and it was not too crowded.

The best part of the museum (in our opinion), is the zoology exhibitions. The museum team has really made an effort to create an immersive decor and environment for each room, which is really unique. We especially loved the atmosphere created for the underwater collection.

They also project videos of the creation of these decor, which is super interesting !

Everything is explained in English which is not always the case in foreign countries.

An other collection worth the detour is the mineralogy exhibition. The museum exposes thousands of precious rocks, with informative descriptions in English.

Finally, we really enjoyed going up, mainly to see the cupola, but the view of Prague as well. It had snowed all morning, so the

To end your visit, you can check out the other departments such as the museum one.

You can even cross the underpass and visit the History Museum, but not everything is translated in English.

It doesn’t change the fact that this entire museum is fascinating and absolutely deserve a visit !

Other museums to see in Prague

There are plenty of museums in Prague, we didn’t visited them all, but here’s a list of few that were recommended to us :

  • Mucha museum : a (very) small museum about the life and work of Alfons Mucha (2 rooms exhibiting posters and sketches).
  • National Technical Museum : everything regarding the evolution whether it is of transportation, household objects, printing, photography, astronomical tools… The hangar is on 4 levels withs trains, cars, bikes, motorcycles, planes…Plan at least 3 hours to see everything, the museum is on 5 levels.

That’s it for the Prague museums visit !
