Bonus : Mývatn Nature Baths.

I’ve added this little bonus, because it truly is a hidden gem compared to the overly famous Blue Lagoon. Mývatn Nature Baths is a geothermal lagoon with beautiful lake views and wayyy fewer crowds. You have two main geothermal pools with different temperature and a smaller one (on picture 3) which is hotter. There are also two saunas facing the lake, allowing you to enjoy the view from inside. There is also a bar in the main pool if you want to enjoy a cocktail in this stunning setting!

top 3 beaches in Iceland

Iceland’s beaches are completely unique, with black sand, rock formations and ice blocks ashore. Whether you’re looking to spot birds along the coast, walk on black sand, discover the famous diamond ice rocks, or simply soak in these natural wonders, there’s a beach here for everyone!

I did write a little warning at the end regarding one of the most dangerous beach in the world.

You can read my article about the 3 best beaches in Iceland here.

  • Dyrhólaey
  • Stokksnes
  • Diamond Beach

I did not put Reynisfjara Beach in this top because of two main reasons.

First, despite being a famous beach – hence sadly more crowded – it doesn’t come near the three I just mentioned. Sure, it has basalt columns and black sand, but people climbing on the columns everywhere just ruin this nature wonder.

Second, Reynisfjara is known to be very dangerous because of sneaker waves, which are extremely strong and unpredictable waves. People who get too close to the water can be dragged into the sea and the Atlantic Ocean being very cold here, survival is more difficult. There have been several deaths over the years due to people underestimating the waves on this beach.

IF you still want to discover Reynisfjara Beach : Stay at least 15-20 meters from the ocean, never turn your back on the ocean and pay attention to the warning signs in front of the beach. In short: watch the beach from behind the fence, don’t go on the sand.

Top 2 hotels in Iceland

To finish this article, I thought it could be interesting to share the hotels we stayed at and loved in Iceland. Both are in the two biggest cities in Iceland : Reykjavik and Akureyri. Guests were quiet, the staff were very kind and helpful, plus it was very good value for money.

First one is in downtown Reykjavik : City Hub. This is a capsule hotel, but it’s the highest-quality one I’ve ever stayed at. The capsule was fairly spacious, you have a clothes rack and space within the pod to store all your belongings and you can have double beds pods. The bathroom area was really clean with many amenities and tastefully decorated. Lastly, at the entrance you have a shared kitchen and self-service bar, where you can reheat food, get drinks and have dinner.

Second one was perfectly located in Akureyri. Hotel Akureyri was the perfect hotel to stop on our ring road itinerary. The room was really comfortable, bathroom was super nice and the breakfast buffet was very good in the morning! The cherry on top? We were under the roof and got to see the northern lights at night through the window!

And that wraps up the best places to see in Iceland !
