Restaurant recommendations in Berlin

Are you coming to Berlin and looking for some restaurant recommendations ? You’ve landed on the right page !

There are tons of great places to dine or have a snack in Berlin, I’ve tried a few and listed for you the best ones below !

So whether it’s a bakery for fresh brötchen, a currywurst stand for a Berlin classic, or international cuisine to change the flavours, I’ll list here some restaurants recommendation for you.

Savoury German specialties

One of the most famous savoury specialty German sausage, you have many declinations such as the Currywurst (sausage topped with curry ketchup), the Bratwurst (grilled sausage with mustard and brea rolls), or Weißwurst (Bavarian veal sausage served with sweet mustard and pretzels).

Another famous specialty is the Döner Kebab. It was introduced by Turkish immigrants in the 1970s, but has became Berlin’s most iconic street food since. The chicken or veal meat is shaved from a vertical spit and served inside a pita bread with salad, many pickled vegetables, feta, and sauces.

To try an incredible Döner kebab, head to Mustafa Gemüse. There is always a waiting line but it is just delicious. There is a perfect balance between the marinated and grilled meat, the various vegetables, herbs, feta and sauce that makes it truly unforgettable (see picture 1 and 2 below).

Other German specialties include :

  • Kartoffelsalat: The German take on potato salad, honestly surprisingly good.
  • Schnitzel: Breaded and fried pork or veal escalope, similar to the ones you can find in Austria (see picture 3).
  • Spätzle: Egg noodles (often served with cheese), it is a common side dish (see picture 3).
  • Sauerkraut: Fermented cabbagel, often served as a classic side dish.
  • Brötchen : Delicious small bread often topped with seeds (poppy seeds, sunflower seeds…) as seen on picture 4 right below.
  • Sauerbraten: Slow-marinated roast beef in a sweet and sour sauce.
  • Eisbein: Pork knuckle, usually cured and slightly boiled.
  • Berliner Boulette: Seasoned meat patties.

For a great schnitzel and spätzle, you can go to the local place called Spätzle Club. It doesn’t look like much but the portions are really generous and it is very good.

Sweet German specialties

Now moving on to the sweet Germany specialties:

  • Berliner Pfannkuchen: Jam-filled doughnut popular in Berlin.
  • Apfelstrudel: Delicious warm apple pastry with cinnamon.
  • Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte: This is a Black Forest cake, so basically a chocolate sponge layered with cream and cherries.
  • Käsekuchen: German-style cheesecake (lighter and less sweet than the American ones).
  • Baumkuchen: Layered “tree cake,” usually covered in chocolate.
  • Bienenstich: Cake with cream filling and caramelized almonds.

world cuisine

We absolutely loved the food scene in Berlin ! There are many different kind of cuisine you can get to try.

For an amazing Vietnamese restaurant, head to Chén Chè. The setting is stunning and the food is really good. We tried the chicken satay, Vietnamese rolls, pork bun and a noodle salad. We paid 35 euros for 2 people, but note that they only accept cash.

Next destination : Spree Fumee. This is a beautiful asian restaurant on a boat on the Spree River. They serve delicious dumplings and skewers in a stunning location, plus prices are reasonable : 6€ for 4 dumplings, 8€ for the skewers or other dishes.

There are two other locations I would recommend. First, The HummusSapiens is a small Lebanese restaurant making wraps, bowls, salads and all kinds of hummus. We opted for the halloumi wrap and the falafel hummus, both excellent and for a total of 15,5€. Bear in mind that the portions are very generous, it was a huge serving of hummus and they offer Lebanese flatbread to eat with so it’s pretty filling.

The second location was near the Hamburger Bahnhof Contemporary Art National Gallery and Futurium. Momo Haus is a food truck cooking nepalese cuisine. We got to try the very good steamed and fried dumplings with a delicious sauce.

For a sweet note, you can head to Duo Sicilian ice cream. They have more than 5 different pistachio-based ice cream flavours and they really don’t disappoint on a hot summer day.

Last but not least, I definitely recommend Lap Coffee for a matcha, ube latte or coffee. There are several locations around Berlin and they also make delicious cookies, brownies and pastries. This is where I tried my favorite matcha.

I absolutely recommend those restaurants if you don’t feel like German cuisine every evening !

That’s it for my restaurant recommendations in Berlin !
