Planning a trip to Tunisia and want to explore Bizerte ? You’re in the right place!
Bizerte is an authentic coastal town waiting to be explored, located at the northern tip of Tunisia and just over an hour from Tunis.
In this article, I’ll list the best places to see in Bizerte as well as what to expect, and of course, I listed all the best day trips from Bizerte/Tunis at the end of the article.
Let’s dive in and plan the perfect day in Bizerte!
First things first, how to get to Bizerte ? Well it is a one-hour drive from Tunis, and the easiest way to get there is by taking a louage, which is a shared taxi, departing once all seats are filled. I waited around 10 minutes only for both trips.
The price for Tunis-Bizerte is 6,5 dinars per person, which equals to less than 2€. It is the same price for the way back.
The louage station in Tunis is Bab Saadoun Louage Station, and it is a 5-minute cab drive from the Medina (I paid 6 dinars for the taxi drive).
Alright, now that the logistics are settled, what should you see in Bizerte?
First thing you will see when arriving in Bizerte is the stunning Old Port. With all the colourful fishing boats, waterfront cafés, and charming old houses, it is the best place in Bizerte to have lunch, read a book or have a little stroll and discover the local life.

There are a lot of cafés on the North side of the port, making it the perfect place to enjoy a mint tea while admiring the view :

After a peaceful break in the Old Port, head right behind to the Medina. This little maze of narrow streets with whitewashed walls and vibrant bougainvilleas has been one of my favorites medinas in Tunisia. It is calm, small and beautiful with all the flowers and paved streets :

Another location worth the detour is the Slaheddine Bouchoucha Market. This is the place to discover the bustling local life. Here, you’ll find fresh local produce, delicious dates, spices, and a vibrant atmosphere that brings the city’s culture to life.

If you are spending a few days in Bizerte but want to explore the nearby cities, these are the places I’d recommend visiting, not too far away and absolutely worth the detour :
- Tunis : From the narrow alleys of the UNESCO-listed Medina to the lively souks and vibrant Central Market, the city offers a lot of history, a wide culinary scene and stunning old town.
- Sidi Bou Said : A picture-perfect village with whitewashed houses, blue doors and vibrant pink bougainvillea. This charming town offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as cute cafés and bambalouni stalls (sweet Tunisian donut).
- Carthage : This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once a powerful empire. You can take a journey through time by exploring the numerous Roman ruins in this archeological site.
- Sousse : A bit further away from Tunis, but a lovely Medina to explore, as well as the Ribat and Great Mosque that you can visit even if you are not a muslim.
- Monastir : 20 minutes from Sousse, Monastir is a peaceful coastal city, with a beautiful seaside and imposing ribat fortress. Take the time to also visit the Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba.
That’s it for my recommendations on the top places to see in Bizerte. I had a wonderful time exploring the old port and Medina, and I’m sure you will too !
